My thoughts on testing
Testing in Aikido is not so much of what you know but what you don’t know. Let me explain this a little bit. After just watching three Nidon (2nd degree black belt) tests of the weekend, every test was both very tough and thorough but tailored to each individual. And in all the tests the testing board was able to both help the students find out what they already knew and guided him to what he did not know and helped him learn more about it.
I feel it is important going into the test not only to know technique but also to expect the Tester to stretch what you know, it is not being mean or cruel but helping you along your path in Aikido. I also feel that it is important to going into the test to be as prepared as possible, I like to prepare as if I would be testing one or two levels of higher rank than I currently am. It is not always easy but it is a learning experience. And if the worse happens so what you are able to learn from the test and retake the exam, do not get frustrated and quit or get mad at the Instructor they are only doing there roll in the test and some day you will be in there shoes. It is one big circle and will come back to you; you will be sitting on a testing board and asking a student some very tough questions.
